The legendary House of Holemans celebrates its centenary.
Established in 1922, the House of Holemans has long been associated with combining the ancient art of Japanese lacquer with the finest jewelry. Although the atelier initially concentrated on producing Art Deco chalices and ciboria, founder Henri Holemans became fascinated by the eastern art of Urushi. Between 1930 and 1933, he perfected the creation of this precious lacquer under the tutelage of a Japanese master. Henri passed on his knowledge of these ancient techniques to his son, Jean, who joined the family firm having studied architecture at the Academy of St Luc. Jean understood that the marriage of exceptional Japanese lacquer and exquisite jewelry was made in heaven, and from 1960 began creating timeless pieces that tell a story of lasting commitment from generation to generation.
Inheriting his father’s passion, Thierry joined the family workshops in 1981 after studying gemology in London. A decade later he opened a boutique on the prestigious Avenue Louise in Brussels. Remaining committed to tradition and the firm’s Art Deco roots, Thierry was keen to create contemporary collections embellished with superb Japanese lacquer, the true DNA of the House. Thierry’s love of the East shone through his creations – not only the designs but also the remarkable stones he sourced while travelling throughout Asia.
Not content with his achievements at home, Thierry had his eye firmly fixed on the epicenter of prestige jewelry creation; and, in 1997 became the first Belgian to open a boutique on the illustrious Place Vendôme in Paris. Highlights included the launch of L’Orichalque, ‘Living Jewels’, in the presence of HRH Princess Astrid and the creation of the wedding tiara for Isabelle Orsini and her wedding to H.E. Edouard De Ligne La Trémoïlle in 2009. This stunning headpiece is on display in the Boggy&Thol gallery in Chiang Mai. Following many years of success, Thierry felt it was time to fulfill his dreams of ‘elsewhere’, and move to the East.
It was in Chiang Mai, Thailand’s Rose of the North, Thierry decided to put down roots and establish Boggy&Thol, a creative collaboration with French Sorbonne-trained designer Cyril Bogaievsky. The flagship boutique houses a workshop where master craftsmen are committed to creating quality works of art from exquisite jewels, precious metals and the finest Japanese lacquer. In 2016, Thierry’s son Thibault followed his father to Thailand. A goldsmith and master in the art of Urushi lacquer, Thibault brings a unique aesthetic to his jewelry design and is honoring the family heritage as head of the Boggy&Thol workshop.
Native to East Asia, it is from the sap of the staghorn sumac tree that Japanese lacquer, or Urushi, is born. Although traditionally associated with vessels, ceremonial pieces, writing materials and objets d’art, Thierry, like his father and grandfather before him, understood just how perfectly this distinctive lacquering technique synthesizes with traditional as well as contemporary jewelry design.
Like the House of Holemans, Urushi lacquer only gets better with age. Its lustrous glow and silky-soft shine are born out of weeks of care. As the lacquer needs time to cure, just a single layer is applied each day, a lengthy, repetitive process. Sixty layers mean at least sixty days of meticulous craftsmanship. The finished product is hard as stone. Silver and gold may scratch, but not the best Urushi – its sleek smoothness and lustrous glow become ever more polished the more you use it.
